Ultrasound Scan

Ultrasound imaging is a procedure in which sound waves are used to create detailed images of your organs. Abdominal, pelvic, and Doppler ultrasound are the three types of ultrasound imaging. Each of these imaging tests can assist your doctor in determining the source of pain or other symptoms in various places of your body. Ultrasound does not use radiation and is generally considered to be a highly safe therapy. Even so, you should talk to your doctor about any concerns you have.

What is an abdominal ultrasound?

An abdominal ultrasound is an imaging test used to assess the organs and structures in the belly (abdomen). These include the:

  • Liver
  • Gallbladder
  • Pancreas
  • Bile ducts
  • Spleen
  • Kidneys
  • Abdominal aorta

Ultrasound allows your healthcare professional to see the organs and structures of the abdomen from outside the body. Blood flow to abdominal organs can also be assessed using ultrasound.

What is a pelvic ultrasound?

A pelvic ultrasound is a scan that looks at the organs and structures in your pelvic area. It lets your healthcare provider look at your:

  • Uterus
  • Cervix
  • Vagina
  • Fallopian tubes
  • Ovaries

Doppler ultrasound can also be used to examine the flow of blood in certain pelvic organs.

Pelvic ultrasound may be done in 2 ways:

  • Trans-vaginal- A long, thin transducer is covered with a plastic or latex sheath and gel. The transducer is then put into the vagina.
  • Trans-abdominal- A transducer is put on your belly using the gel.
